Guest Speaker Series: Alan Halter

 

This week the GIS@ACC Program welcomes new virtual guest speaker:

Alan Halter

IT Geospatial Analyst Senior 

City of Austin

In this live web meeting Alan Halter will present on “Mapping and Urban Forestry.” The presentation will cover various topics related to urban forestry and how we use GIS to collect data and analyze our environment to make informed decisions. Topics will include Alan’s path to becoming a GIS professional working in urban forestry, how we collect and use tree canopy data, and a deep dive into the newly updated Community Tree Priority Map (formerly Tree Planting Prioritization)—a decision-support tool used to align equitable goals with urban forestry activities like tree planting and tree care.

Alan Halter is an IT Geospatial Analyst Senior with the City of Austin. He works within the Development Services Department’s, Community Tree Preservation Division. Alan works on various urban forestry projects, all related to trees, people, and location.  

Alan has been studying and working in the GIS industry since 2009. He has a graduate degree from UT Austin, an undergraduate geography degree from Texas Christian University, and a GIS Certificate from Tarrant County College. He became a Certified GIS Professional (GISP) in 2015.

Alan’s GIS accomplishments include serving on the ATX GIS Day planning committee, Best Cartography award for Esri’s Map Gallery, maps selected for Esri’s Map Book, keynote speaker for Texas State University’s GIS Day, and works featured in the International Society of Arboriculture Newsletter. He is currently working on a presentation for Esri’s User Conference 2021.
