GIS Program Manager at Continental Divide Trail Coalition

POSITION SUMMARY
Manages detailed spatial information about the CDT and surroundings, performs spatial analysis and conservation research, and creates accurate cartographic products for internal, federal and public use. The GIS Program Manager works in partnership with other CDTC programs to apply spatial data and production capabilities in the everyday needs of the organization. It is the goal of the GIS Program Manager, in direct collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service CDT GIS Program, to act as the authoritative source for CDT spatial data, and to leverage cartographic methods to streamline CDTC operations as the organization works towards its management and trail completion goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintains and manages CDTC’s GIS Program by working with the Executive Director, federal land management partners, and other CDTC Program Managers to develop program needs. Expectations are to assist in the implementation of a strategic approach to address program needs as follows:
    • Manage authoritative CDT centerline and associated data.
    • Perform spatial data queries and analysis.
    • Develop data standards and best practices GPS data collection.
    • Provide timely support pertaining to CDTC data and cartographic services to partners and the general public.
  • Maintains and manages spatial information pertaining to trail use in coordination with Communications, Gateway Community, and Administrative programs as follows:
    • Maintain trail information within CDTC Interactive Web Map and associated web mapping products.
    • Prepare gateway community-specific trail information spatial products on an as-needed basis.
    • Produce updated versions of the CDT Print Map Set on an annual basis or as necessitated by changes in trail alignment and trail information data.
  • Maintain CDT State of the Trail Report
    • Analyze most current CDT and agency data to update reports on trail mileage by state, land manager, trail type etc.
    • Update CDTC and partner trail projects by year and by field unit.
    • Manage updates to reporting on major trail completion projects and grant funding.
    • Re-produce maps to a high cartographic standard as needed.
  • Perform research pertaining to landscape and regional scale conservation issues of the CDT.
    • Produce data and methodology research, spatial analysis, cartographic presentation of findings, and critical writing for projects of varying size, needs and subject matter.
    • Manage additional research performed by future interns or partner conservation groups along the trail.
  • Prepare GIS presentation and proposal quality maps in a timely manner as per requests from the Executive Director, Agency Staff, and other CDTC program areas.
  • Process aerial photography and satellite data
  • Assist in private land research and maintain spatial records of land ownership along the trail.
  • Assist with the development of public information materials, includes providing updates and reports for Congress, website, guidebooks, brochures, etc
  • Manage the production of visual information as it pertains to cartography, web mapping and landscape representation.
  • Add to creative thinking around new ways to share, disperse and otherwise provide trail data and information.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned and required.

APPLICANT QUALIFICATIONS & PREFERRED SKILLS

EDUCATION

Must have completed a degree at Associates level or higher. Relevant areas of study include Environmental Science, Planning, Conservation, Geography, or Landscape Architecture. However, any course of study with demonstrated critical or creative work in GIS and mapping is welcome. Advanced degrees and professional experience will be considered favorably.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Proficient in ESRI ArcGIS products - specifically ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS Online.
  • Proficient in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat.
  • Experience scripting/programming in Python (ArcPy)
  • Experience creating web maps with ArcGIS Pro, CalTopo, and MapBox
  • Experience collecting and processing GPS data.
  • Demonstrated spatial analysis skills.
  • Demonstrated cartographic design skills.
  • Self-directed, organized, detail oriented and flexible. Good interpersonal skills, team-oriented, enjoy working with others.

PREFERRED SKILLS
  • 3-5 years professional GIS experience.
  • Enterprise spatial database management skills in SQL.
  • Experience customizing web applications with Javascript, HTML, and CSS.
  • Familiarity with web development and Wordpress administration.
  • Knowledge of land use practices and management in the Rocky Mountain West.
  • Experience working with federal land management agencies.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • The ability to maintain a flexible schedule is necessary. This position requires some travel (including weekends) that may last from one week to one month in duration.
  • Work is performed both indoors in a busy, collaborative office space where noise and interruptions prevail, and outdoors where environmental elements prevail.
  • Must be able to frequently sit and walk for long periods and distances, stand, climb, bend, kneel, sit, stoop, reach and lift, push or pull. Manual dexterity is required.
  • The ability to hike 15+ miles through mountain terrain. The ability to talk and hear via the telephone and through face-to-face communication is needed.
  • Vision requirements include near and far acuity. Upper body strength is required to lift/move up to 50 pounds unassisted and 100 pounds assisted.
  • The employee is frequently required to operate a personal vehicle as well as CDTC rental vehicles, therefore current driver’s license, auto insurance and clean driving record are required.
  • The employee is occasionally required to drive a personal vehicle, therefore a current driver’s license and auto insurance is required.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
$40-45,000K annual salary DOE. CDTC also provides benefits including generous vacation/PTO, monthly health insurance stipend, cell phone reimbursement, and 403(b) retirement plan contributions.
