ACC GIS Students Launch Mapping Drone

ACC GIS students and instructors met at Zilker Park in downtown Austin on Saturday to launch our new Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The Robota Eclipse UAV, also known as a drone, is a fixed-wing aircraft with a SONY RX 100 camera capable of mapping approximately 400 acres per 50-minute flight. Led by ACC GIS Adjunct Instructor and FAA Part 107 Certified Remote Pilot Christian Hartnett, students learned to plan, fly, and recover the UAV. Back in the classroom, student will process the imagery captured during the flight to create a high resolution orthomosaic - think Google imagery basemap with sharper imagery.

At ACC, we are committed to teaching the technical, analytical, and professional skills required to find employment in a GIS-related profession - including leading-edge technology like our new UAV mapping drone!
