Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) Texas Natural Resources Information System (TNRIS) Internship for Fiscal Year 2021, Spring semester

Location: Remote Work from Home/Stephen F. Austin State Office Building, Austin, Texas
Time Period: Spring 2021 (January - May)
Schedule: Part-time, 10-19 hours/week, 250 hours total minimum per semester
Compensation: $15.00 per hour + optional three (3) semester hours credit through university

Title: Data and Design Intern

Classification: Paid and credit-based internship. $15.00 per hour for the semester and credit through college/university (to be arranged by the student).

General Job Description: Data and Design Intern will assist on projects related to the development of a statewide water data hub. The intern will play a key role in TNRIS with primary responsibility for special projects, to organize and present design research findings, develop design criteria and concepts, review and document water datasets, and work with technical specialists and other staff to support priority initiatives in TNRIS and for the water data hub project.

Job Duties: The intern will primarily focus on synthesizing user research and creating documentation for various water datasets across the state. Additional duties include assisting in the design process from transcription and organization of qualitative user research to affinity mapping, ideation, and development of concepts and visualizations; categorizing and documenting water data; mapping linkages across various datasets; identifying data transformations needed for data standardization; and working closely with other staff involved in the Texas water data hub project.

Other assignments may be added to provide the intern with greater exposure to the important work performed by TNRIS and TWDB teams.

Qualifications: Applicants should either be enrolled at a recognized Texas college or university or a recent graduate. Successful candidates will have a background in UX design, UX research, data science, information architecture, or other related field, and a desire to improve skills in design or information science. Enrollment or completion of an introductory Design course is strongly preferred.

Understanding of the design process, visual design experience, knowledge of data management best practices, and familiarity with the geography of Texas is a plus. This position requires great attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work well in team settings and independently.

Successful candidate will have access to their own laptop computer and participate in virtual meetings.
