Job Description:
The Geographic Information Specialist III is responsible for initiating, planning, and conducting complex geospatial projects as part of the COVID-19 Data Dissemination Team within DSHS’ Center for Health Statistics. The position works with public health subject matter experts, other GIS analysts, and executives to complete a wide range of projects.

This position regularly interacts with internal and external stakeholders to elicit their GIS needs, establishes timelines for responding to these needs, and accurately develops and prepares geospatial data and products for customers. The position is regularly responsible for geocoding large public health and other data files related to the COVID-19 pandemic, for example, COVID-19 case counts, hospitalizations, and related fatalities. The work further requires the management and manipulation of geospatial data to create, maintain, display, and update public health maps and data visualizations related to COVID-19 data.
The position works to document all processes and procedures, create appropriate metadata to ensure complete and accurate data, and updates and maintains spatial databases for agency-wide use to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Additionally, the position works proactively to identify agency COVID-19 data needs to include web mapping and geospatial analyses. Such efforts apply statistical and geospatial analytic methods to measure the confluence of epidemiologic, population, and other data sources, resulting in innovative solutions and resources based on scientifically sound principles.

The position will prepare and conduct research presentations, will develop and prepare technical papers informing public health initiatives, and will coordinate with the GIS team lead to propose and implement long-term projects related to COVID-19 data. Work is performed with limited supervision and with considerable latitude for professional creativity, initiative, and independent judgment.
