GIS/GPS Intern - Museums and Cultural Programs

Work schedule: 10-15 hours per week including noon-5pm Saturday and Sunday
Paid Internship: $15.00 per hour.

Primary Project

  • The City of Austin Museums and Cultural Programs is seeking candidates for a GIS/GPS Intern to assist with collecting assimilating data using GIS and GPS.
  • This position will gather data in spreadsheets, on site in the cemetery with ArcGIS Collector and a GPS booster, and manage the data to help publish Esri Story Maps.
  • The project intends to maximize Esri’s capabilities for geolocating detailed information on people’s lives and geolocate gravestones on a cemetery map for the purpose of public engagement and tourism.
  • Additional duties include giving tours of the cemetery to visitors, which helps to inform the public as well as the staff and intern on the functionality of the maps.
  • A substantial amount of time will be spent walking outdoors using ArcGIS Collector and giving tours of Oakwood Cemetery during the varied Texas weather.

Internship Goals

  • To contribute to collection of data and organization of information for educational benefit to the public.
  • To apply GIS and GPS skills learned in an educational setting for real and public uses.
  • To work with a small team of 2-3 people to apply knowledge and grow communication skills.
  • To learn the various uses of information and to improve platform for sharing historical data, while sharing data with the public during tours.

Qualifications

  • Graduate or undergraduate coursework or major in Geography with GIS and GPS technology.
  • Working knowledge of ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
  • Experience using spreadsheets and organizing information.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy of information.
  • Good communication skills and ability to relate to the public as our site has many of visitors.
  • An interest in Austin and Texas history and storytelling a plus.

Additional Information
This position can be either a summer internship or an ongoing internship depending on the student’s availability.
