In coordination with City of Austin, ACC GIS Faculty and Staff used ACC's GeoSLAM ZEB-REVO Laser scanner to map the shallow areas of the pool as well as the surrounding grounds, bath houses and lifeguard room. The City drains the pool on Thursdays for cleaning and maintenance and allowed GIS Department Chair Sean Moran and GIS Admin and Student Jennifer Black in the pool to capture the drained areas. The final tally includes 30 separate scans with an estimated 50 million points collected over 4 hours.
ACC will process the data and provide it to the City for analysis. We'll also use the data in our Advanced Problems in GIS course to visualize and calculate the volume of Barton Springs Pool.
