Scientists Create 3D Coral Reef Maps

Read how scientists led by Greg Asner and Robin Martin are mapping coral reef structure, species, and health in the New York Times' article To Map a Coral Reef, Peel Back the Seawater. The married research team have mounted an imaging spectroscopy, high-resolution camera, and LiDAR sensor on a fixed-wing airplane named the Global Airborne Observatory (GAO). This innovative system can map 250,000 acres of coral reef a day at a depth of 50 feet.

To learn more, check out the article AND register for ACC GISC 1421 Introduction to Raster-based GIS this Fall Semester where you'll learn how to use many of the technologies employed in the GAO!
